Printemps du gout - Paris
Walking down the icy, snowy streets of Paris this morning, I hear voices in the distance talking about fondu, oysters and fresh baked bread. As I walk in front of the Printemps store front windows, I see inviting scenes of food laid out before famous Parisian views featuring the Eiffel Tower and the Opera. Cheese, Meat, Bread, Fish, Fruits and Vegetable, Pasteries, they are all present and all gloriously displayed. I look up and see “Printemps Du Gout” (Spring of Tastes) and realise that Printemps department store has just opened a two story gourmet food bazar on the 7th and 8th floors of the department store! Four attractive chefs stare at me and further invite me to come in!

Come in!
Spring, food, gourmet, views of Paris, all are promised to me so I immediately take the escalator up to the 8th floor of the department store. I am impatient to reach the top and discover Paris’ latest culinary feat and escape the cold, wet streets of Paris.
Gastronomie Francaise
I decide to start on the top and work my way down. I do get a glimpse of an unending selection of Champagnes as I continue my ascent to Gastronomie Francaise. I will be sure to check that section out carefully on the way back down. I am now up on the top of Paris and see that windows line all sides of the floor so no matter where I am I have a view of Paris! C’est pas mal!
World Champion of Pastries
It’s Wednesday morning and this is a new place in Paris so there are a few tables here and there with people in the know discussing business or meeting with friends for a coffee. Baskets filled with fresh vegetables that seem to have been gathered earlier in the morning at a local farm are the center piece that invites us to stop and try some food prepared by one of the chefs. Those four chefs I saw outside on the billboard are now explained to me as I find out that Gontran Cherrier is responsible for the bread, Laurent Dubois, the cheeses, Akrame is the chef Etoile that is honoured and Christopher Michalak, the world champion of Pastries!!! I didn’t even know that someone like that exists! I am reassured, I am with the best of the best! La Creme de la Creme!
Le Marche dans le ciel
I decided to work my way back down to the 7th floor where I see neatly arranged products filling the shelves around me. They are touted as coming from “artisans de reference et des Maisons iconique”, in other words, only the best products coming from the best and most famous producers! As I wander around, I realise that I can also stop for tastes here and there. I know that in a week or two, this place will be filled with people from around the world all fighting to get a view from one of the windows and pick up some truffle mustard or caviar from one of the stands. I think about when I can come back and take advantage of a delicious meal and a view to die for! Le Marche Dans le Ciel, The market in the Sky, that’s what this wonderful place is called! I also realise that there are tables outside. That means eating outside with a view when the weather gets warmer and the snow melts away.
